The City of Thousand Oaks is an environmental leader in many areas, and we thought the end of the year would be a great time to showcase some of our community’s achievements. Did you know that the:

  1. newly opened Household Hazardous Waste Facility has been designated as an international best practices benchmark facility?
  2. City was designated a 2014 Solar Champion by Environment, California?
  3. City of Thousand Oaks was recognized by Bicycling Magazine as one of America’s Best Bike Cities and in 2014 was ranked number 33 in the nation?
  4. there are over 38,000 vehicle fleets in North America and the City of Thousand Oaks was ranked 31st out of the top 100 peak performing fleet operations in North America?
  5. City of Thousand Oaks has been designated as one of the top 50 in the greenest fleets in North America
  6. City has approximately 60% of our Fleet using alternative fuels?
  7. City is in Trail Town USA’s National Hall of Fame with over 150 miles of trails and that over 40% of the land in the City of Thousand Oaks is set aside for open space?

Bonus Fact: The City of Thousand Oaks Public Works Department was just reaccredited by the American Public Works Association. We comply with over 600 best management industry practice standards that cover all aspects of our work. We are one out of only 100 public works agencies in North America to be recognized in this way, and the Association has selected three of our practices as Model Practices. They include tree inventory, graffiti removal, and Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) meter leak detection.

  1. I knew just one of the facts … about T.O. being names one of the best bicycling cities in America. It’s one of the reasons we decided to locate our e-bike business here! We hope to contribute to the health and sustainability of this beautiful place.

  4. I knew many. All I care about is that city staff does an absolutely fantastic job of making this a great place to live.

  5. I knew about the Open Space program, but didn’t know TO was in a hall of Fame for that. The facts about TO are great, more good reasons to live here !

  15. Very impressive although I must admit I knew of none of the facts listed.

  16. We use the Household Hazardous Waste Facility on a regular basis and really like the facility’s availability. We have had solar panels for nearly eight years and are pleased that our City is encouraging businesses and residents to consider solar energy. We love our GREEN CITY and look forward to when Thousand Oaks uses only recycle bags like San Luis Obispo County.

    For a City with so much infrastructure that started in the 1960s (or before) there must have been a lot of efforts to update/upgrade along the last 50 years. It’s harder than for a newer high-growth area. Good job!

  36. Fascinating how earth conscious our city is. I knew 3 facts but there are so many more ways our city helps the citizens of Thousand Oaks. My children grew up participating in various organizations and school projects that were supported through grant donations as high school students. They learned to write a grant proposal as well as bring to fruition their projects. What a wonderful place we live in.

  45. I either knew of 8 out of 10 or was familiar with some of the achievements. I have used the hazardous waste facility numerous times and it is now even more convenient. We enjoy walking on the trails and there is loads of information about them. The local newspaper “The Acorn” is a great source of the information regarding the cities achievements. We have lived here for 40 years and I can’t think of anywhere in the world that I would rather live!!!

  51. YIKES, I literally only knew of one of these. That’s terrible. I’ve lived out here since 1964 and was amazed at how little I know about the city. Way to go T.O. keep up the good work.

Special appreciation should be mentioned for all the volunteers in our community who help make it one of the top in the nation.

  58. I knew most of them. We use the hazardous waste facility several times a year. The waste treatment facility is awesome. I visited during. Bike ride and the staff showed us the cogeneration and let us see the solar farm. Thanks to the city for completing the bike lanes on Lynn Road. I enjoy riding in the city.

  59. I am a member of Trail Watch and I am familiar with the great trail system we have in the city. I know about the bike systems within the city, & I realize that the wastewater treatment plant is energy self sufficient. I had no idea the city had won so many awards.

  66. I am aware of many of the programs but did not know our city is so highly rated when compare to others around the nation.

  67. I knew about the Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Newbury Park. I have been utilizing the program for a couple of years now and love the fact they have an actual building. They are able to offer more days and times to do exchanges and drop offs.

  70. I traveled to many cities and when asked where I live I am always proud to say Thousand Oaks, CA. Reading these ten awesome facts has only made me prouder, keep up the good work Thousand Oaks.

  71. I’m so proud to be able to say that I have lived in Thousand Oaks since 1959. Although I knew 5 facts, I was impressed to see all of the other great things our city is doing. What a wonderful showcase and example of “green” we are to the rest of the nation.

  72. I have lived in the TO area for 40 years and have seen a lot of growth in those years. I was happy to see the Oaks become a reality. I have enjoyed the library and the Goebal Center and was glad when the teen center was built for the young people. We have great parks that have been well maintained and well used by the public. I knew about 6 of the facts.

    We do know that Thousand Oaks is one of the best, if not the best, places to live anywhere in the country.

  74. I grow up in Santa Rosa Valley starting in 1954. After attending Santa Rosa Elementary, Ventura College and San Fernando Valley College I moved to Thousand Oaks in 1974. I remember Moorpark Road as a 2 way highway and the open land. I was at the opening of Vons Market which is now the toy store at the Janss Mall and other stores. I knew most of the facts listed.l

  75. I Have visited the Hazardous waste facility and use the bike paths regularly. It was a pleasure to learn Popular Science and Bicycling Magazine have listed Thousand Oaks in their list of best cities. I knew the cities buses were operating greener but did not know the percentage. Great fact about the Hill Canyon water treatment plant! Thank you City of Thousand Oaks for making our area such a great place to live.

  77. We knew about all of these facts and more – we read the monthly e-mail, the Thousand Oaks Star, and the Acorn. We also attend lectures at the Goebel Senior Center on actions we can take at home to be “green”. We are well informed about the the terrific job Thousand Oaks does in implementing environmentally friendly initiatives. We would be proud to have and use a limited edition Thousand Oaks reusable tote bag!

  82. The hazardous waste facility is terrific and we have used it many times. We didn’t know about its standing, but it makes sense. Also we knew about the fact that the waste treatment plant was off the grid. This is an amazing, family friendly city!
